Privacy policy

My Marxist Valentine (“the app”) is a companion to the poetry collection of the same name by Deborah Finding. It does not display the poems; the book’s text is bundled only so the advice column can be written in its voice. The column is written by a fictional cast and generated by AI models. This policy explains what the app does with your information.

What we do not do

• We do not require an account.
• We do not collect analytics, advertising identifiers, or location.
• We do not sell or share personal data.
• We do not use your letters to train models.

Your conversations

Your letters and the column’s answers are stored only on your device. You can delete them at any time from Settings → Delete all conversations, or by deleting the app.

Where answers are generated

You choose in Settings (and at first launch) which of these may be used:

1. On this iPhone. Apple’s on-device model. Your text never leaves the device.
2. Apple Private Cloud. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Your letter and the conversation so far are sent to Apple’s servers to generate the answer. Apple designed this service so that data is not stored and is not accessible to Apple; see Apple’s Private Cloud Compute documentation.
3. Claude. Your letter and the conversation so far are sent to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic to generate the answer with the Claude model. Our server does not store the content of your messages; it keeps only technical metadata (a pseudonymous device key, timestamps, request sizes, token counts) for security and abuse prevention, for up to 30 days. Anthropic processes the data under its API terms; as of the date above Anthropic retains API inputs and outputs for a limited period for trust-and-safety purposes and does not use them to train its models.

The cloud options are off until you turn them on, and you can turn them off again at any time. When they are off, nothing leaves your device: the app does not even fetch its remote configuration (a small settings file from our server) until you allow cloud answers.

Device attestation

To stop other software from abusing our server, the app uses Apple’s App Attest service to prove it is a genuine copy of the app. This creates a cryptographic key on your device and sends Apple-signed proof to our server. The key does not identify you personally.

Reports

If you report an answer, we receive the category and comment you write. The conversation excerpt is included only if you switch that option on. Reports are kept for up to 30 days so we can review them.

Children

The app is for adults (18+) and is not directed at children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access or erase personal data. Because we hold no account data, most requests are satisfied by deleting the app. For anything else, contact us at contact@my-marxist-valentine.com.

This website

my-marxist-valentine.com is a static site. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads nothing from third parties. Cloudflare, which hosts it, keeps ordinary server logs for security.

We will update this page when the policy changes and note the date at the top.
